It's all good!

I just have to say I am really liking this "homeschooling thing"!  Yes, I know we are only on week 3, but so far it's all good!
There are SO many joys of homeschooling!  And some I am sure I have not even had the pleasure of experiencing yet!
This week's lessons are better and keeping the boys attention more.  I would assume as we go along they will get harder......they need a challenge right now!
The curriculum gives me choices where I can add activities in or take away things that are too easy.  I am loving the freedom of picking what I know will work for my boys.   And guess what they get to be BOYS!  If they need to get up and walk around...well that is OK!  And wiggle in their chair.  Or stand up to work.  Or even sit on the floor.  FREEDOM!
Each morning they have about 10 minutes/"free time"(as they like to call it)between lessons to use their Cuisenaire Rods.  We work on math with the rods, but they have found they can build letters too. And many other things.
Well this morning during their "free time" I was able to leave them to work and go start laundry.  As I was walking away it hit me the freedom we have with homeschooling.  Granted I was back in less than 3 minutes, but I was able to start a load of laundry and come right back and continue with our lessons.
It was liberating!
Anyhoo, I am liking this! And the boys are too.
Our freedom continued as we took our lesson outdoors.  We went on a walk searching for twigs to form letters.
And on the way back we had the time to stop and check out my Fall mums blooming.  In just a short time they will be exploding with FALL colors!
And of course we still had time to come up our Fall version of Loaded Yogurt.  Vanilla yogurt, sprinkles, candy corn and chocolate chips.  Hey, don't judge!  I will do anything to get Ryan to eat dairy!

It's great to be able to have all this time to get school done and still have free time!
Time to.....clean toilets--Boo!!!! or try a new recipe.....Caramel Apple Cheesecake Bars(I'll share the recipe if it is a keeper)
Freedom, free time, liberating feelings....it's all good!

Fall party and craft

Last week I told you I would tell you all about our Fall party we had on Wednesday,  the first day of Fall!!! We also did a cute craft that day too!
Ever since the boys were old enough to enjoy doing crafts and bake, I have made a BIG deal out of birthdays, special days, holidays and changing seasons.
I am just wired that way.  I want the boys to remember these fun times.  And I melt when I hear them say, "This is the BEST day ever!!"
After making a stop to a few stores we had all our supplies for a FALL PARTY!!!!  We baked cookies, had candy and talked about things we love about Fall.

The boys waiting on me to start the party.

They enjoyed sugar cookies and a caramel while I had my Buckwheat Banana muffin.
The leaf above the plate is part of the craft.

We made this poster to display............

Here are the cards we used for the poster.  I simply typed out what everyone loves and we glued them to the card and then to the poster.

We'll do this throughout the Fall months.  Here were the favorites the day of the party.
Ryan loves pumpkins, Matthew loves fall cookies, the color of the leaves and to jump in them, Momma loves cool mornings and Daddy loves Fall brews.

Here are a few more things I love about Fall.
Pumpkin! Spice! Lattes!, baking and Circle E's Country Morning candle burning(cinnamon pumpkin spice scent-OH it is wonderful!)

What are some of the things YOU love about Fall?  I would love for you to share with me!

1st Science experiment

Four words for you!  The dog ate it!
Seriously, Arthur ate the boys' 1st Science experiment.
Note to self: Do not leave a bowl of food in a window that a dog can reach.
Our theme this week is the SUN.  We were to put a small bowl of green grapes in a SUNNY window and watch them change.
Arthur had other plans for the grapes.  All 12 of them.

Delightful!

The weather was absolutely amazing today!!!  On our way home from grocery shopping the boys thought it would be a great day for the park.  I could not have agreed more.  So we came home quickly unloaded the groceries and packed up a basket full of goodies.  On the way out I thought to bring a blanket and our new book for this week's lessons.
What a perfect way to start the week!
Our lessons this week focus on the letter "S" and the SUN.  So as I read Moonbear's Shadow the boys enjoyed their goodies.

And we all enjoyed the story along with the SUN and the soft breeze.  The boys noticed we had a visitor joining us.  It was one of Howard's friends.  Howard is a dragon fly that lives in our backyard......so the boys think.

Once I finished reading the story we talked about the SUN.  We discussed some things we had learned earlier this morning in school and then Matthew proceeded to give us a lesson.  He showed us what God made with the sun.  Our shadow.

We finished our lessons about the SUN and shadows and off we went down the trails.
It is not the best park, but to them it doesn't matter.
As long as we are together, they are outside and we are looking at God's creation.
We find beauty all around us.
As we walked the trail they both talked about our surroundings.  Insects, wildflowers, sounds of nature, the wind, the SUN-and both of them refer to it as God's creation.
Here are a few things they spotted along the way.

Not sure what these really are, but we like to call them Horse's apples.
Do you know what they are?

It was such a delightful day!  Finishing school up early and being outdoors to enjoy God's creation is such a blessing.  A pure delight to my soul.

Muffin Tin Monday

Muffin Tin Monday was our mid-morning snack today.  Today was our first "real" lesson. It was SO much better than the last 2 weeks.  The boys really enjoyed it.
It is a brisk morning here so all the boys could think about for breakfast was hot cocoa.
Yes I said a brisk morning!  A little Fall weather!!!
We started school around 7:45 and were done by 9AM.   It's kindergarten people!
By the time we were done they were starving......hot cocoa was not enough.  I needed something fast!
So I thought why not do a Muffin Tin Monday breakfast/mid-morning snack.  So here is what I came up with.

Yogurt drinks, raisins, nectarines, apples, kiwi and strawberries.  And then Loaded oatmeal cookies and Buckwheat coffee cake.
I think I like MTM for breakfast!  Have great day!

8AM JOY-School outdoors!

We enjoyed a slow morning and finally made it outdoors.  I wrote as they ran around and shouted out things "Created by God" and "Made by People".   After this we went back in to make our charts.  It was a good two weeks learning about Creation.  We are all excited to start lesson 1 on Monday.
Enjoy your Friday and have some FUN this weekend!

As he prayed......

We sat down for dinner and it was his turn to pray.  I had talked to them about praying for more than just their "soccer games"(Ryan)and the "sunny day"(Matthew).
As he prayed I could not believe these were words coming from a five year old.  I mean we have been praying with them for a while now, but it was a mature prayer.
I covered my mouth in shock and tried to stop the tears.  I sat and listened as he prayed.

"Dear God, thank you for this food you have given us.  I pray for Daddy at school and for him to do good.  God, help us to have better attitudes.  In Jesus name I pray, Amen."

OK Mom, I know you are proud of me, but please go away now!

Fall favorites!!!

Well it is officially FALL!!!!  That gives me every right to go CRAZY with FALL FUN!!!!
So that is exactly what we are doing today.  The boys went to bed knowing today would be the first day of Fall.  And of course when they woke up they thought it would be cooler weather and the leaves would be falling off the trees.
That's OK because I will make up for the cooler weather and leaves not falling.
We are having a FALL PARTY!  Decorations, crafts and baking!!!  Oh how I love this time of year!!!!
I have decided to make every Wednesday on my blog a Fall themed post. It could be a craft we do, a Fall recipe or just a picture.  Whatever it is,  it will all focus on this amazing time of the year when we see beauty come alive with the changing season.  I have heard Autumn is a second Spring when every leaf is a flower. For me it is a time to sit and enjoy the beauty God has given us. So on with Fall!
That is until December and then I'll change it to CHRISTMAS!!
But for now lets talk FALL!  Today I am thinking of some of my Fall favorites................
Candy corn and caramels,

wearing flats for a change(AND jeans!),

afternoon coffee,
baking(anything from cookies to pumpkin bread with cinnamon chips)and leaving my backdoor open all day....that has not happened yet.
These are just a few of my favorites about Fall.  What are some of yours?  I invite YOU to share with me.  Even if you do not have a google account you can still leave a comment.  Just click on the "anonymous" button and make sure to leave your name with your comment.  I love hearing about Fall......tell me your favorites!
I'll tell you all about our FALL party next week!
Happy FALL!!!

Creation

Well we are just about done with our introductory part of the boys' curriculum.
The curriculum I am using,  My Father's World,  makes the first 2 weeks of school all about CREATION.  Each day, days 1-7, was dedicated to learning what God created on those specific days.  The boys' favorite part of it was making their own creation poster and creation book.

Here they are working on the 6th day of Creation.

Here are the completed Creation Posters they each made.

(One of the many JOYS of homeschooling-BEDHEAD hair!)

The next few days will be a review of what they have learned about Creation.  I am glad it is over and ready to move on to real lessons.  Don't get me wrong I truly enjoyed the creation part of this, but that is just about all we did.  The other parts of the curriculum were nothing more than ABCs.  The boys were bored to tears and really already know their ABCs.  So I added Bible study, fine motor skill manipulatives and reading.......me reading books to them.  Ryan struggles with his fine motor skills so I am adding in these manipulatives anywhere I can.
So we will finish up Creation this week.  Friday will be a FUN day!  I intend to make it an outside lesson to look for things God created and things that man made.  They will then make a chart of things "Created by God" and things "Made by People".  This is right up our alley.  Observing the world around us.  Our little world that God gave us!!!!  OUTSIDE!!!!
As we finished up today's lesson and the boys ran off to play, I sat looking over the rest of the week's lessons. It made me stop to think about all the things GOD has created around me.

How often do you stop and think about all the things "Created by God"?

Muffin Tin Monday

We are now on our second week of school.  Muffin tin meals are excellent when I am short on time and last minute things come up.  I have reserved them for Mondays only to avoid boredom for the boys, but use them for others times like snacks or dinner to change things up.
Mondays are my grocery shopping days.  Although I go before lunch, after shopping with them I am worn out.  You would think it would be the other way around.  Anyway by the time we get out of the store, unload groceries and put them away, cooking is the last thing I want to do.
Muffin Tin Monday is my friend!
Here what they had today..........................
Carrots, bell pepper and cucumber with Ranch dressing.  Strawberries and red grapes. Dolphin and heart bread. Pepperoni and then for dessert Loaded Oatmeal cookies(recipe on blog).
I didn't realize it is shapes week, but I think I did OK.  Lots of circles(pepperoni, cucumbers)oval grapes, strawberries-they kinda look like a triangle and then heart bread.

The ideas are endless!  Check out what others have done over at

Worn, but still a comfort

These pitiful little creatures were at one time precious, white little lambs.
The boys received them for their dedication from a very good friend.  At the time the boys, just a month old,  slept in the same crib.  So both lambs were in the crib with them.  Along with two soft and tiny baby blankets, each with the boys name monogrammed on it.  Those were from Mimi and Pawpaw.
Well it didn't take long for the boys to decide who preferred what.
Ryan liked the lammies(he always called them that)and Matthew the blankies(that is what he called them).  And so it all came about that Ryan held both lammies and Matthew both blankies.
These little lammies never left this child's hands as he slept.(same with Matthew and the blankies)
And while awake they were right beside him.  And maybe in his hands.  They were a comfort to him.  And apparently still are.
Ryan came to me today and had both lammies.  He doesn't sleep with them anymore, but still takes them out from time to time.  He said, "Momma, will you rub my back with my lammies"?
Here lately Ryan has wanted me to rub his back more often.   Especially in the mornings when that brace comes off.  Each morning when he wakes up the very first thing he wants is to get out of his brace.
I take the brace off and peel the skin tight brace shirt off his warm little body.  He then rolls over and begs to have his back rubbed, touch, scratched and tickled.  Something touching his back.
I can only imagine how good that must feel after sleeping all night without being able to touch his back.
So today I rubbed his back with these little lammies that have given him such comfort over the years. They are worn, but still a comfort to him.
They made it to every cast change.  A series of 6 casts over 14 months!  These lammies went to the OR with Ryan six times.  All the nurses would make comments about how worn they were, but how much Ryan needed them at every cast change.  And they gladly took them with him.
I can remember having nightmares visions the night before cast change day that I had left them at home.  So as I would sneak him out in the wee hours(we had to leave some times at 5AM)to drive to Dallas I made certain I had his lammies.  Can you imagine what a cast day would have been like without them?!?
Here are those sweet lammies.  This was his first cast.  It was quite rugged and his doctor was still learning to say the least.  You fellow CAST Moms can see just how different his casts were from a "Mehta" cast in the beginning.  No clue what the second window is for in the front.  I was still learning at that time too. :)

And there they are again....I think this was at his 6th and finally cast application.  He was waiting to go to the OR.  He really had no clue exactly what was about to happen, but by his sixth cast he knew this hospital was not the happy place.
But those lammies sure did bring him comfort.
And five years later they are still bringing him comfort.  Comfort rubbing his spine....funny they are still helping him with his back after all these years.
So my advice to any Mom of a young child that has a lovie, lammie, blankie...whatever they call it, do not get rid of them just yet.  You never know when they can still bring your child some joy.
They may be worn, but there is still comfort left in them.

Boys play and Momma shops!

That's right Momma went shopping.  It does not happen very often because quite frankly I do not like to shop.  And I sure don't like "just looking around"!  Since I turned 43 yesterday and had money burning a hole in my pocket I was set to shop.  I needed a few things anyway.
I didn't do major shopping though.  It always works this way for me......when I have extra money to spend I usually have no luck.  But I did finally buy some lipstick after wearing lip liner and chapstick for over 5 months.  And of course I couldn't come home without purchasing something for FALL.  It was nice to get out with my younger sister and "go gallivanting around town".  Thanks hon for the free morning!

Meanwhile the boys stayed with Daddy.  Brant was doing yard work so this was a perfect opportunity to PLAY OUTSIDE!
As Brant trimmed trees the boys made a teepee around a tree.

They amaze me!  I love to watch them play and create things out of nothing.  And come up with fun out of  trees branches? Their imagination is constantly going!
It didn't stop here.
They even got walking sticks out of the tree trimming.

Oh to be a kid again!  A five year old carelessly playing outdoors as Daddy works and Momma shops!

CAMO

Well Ryan now has a CAMO brace!  He loves the camo, but is not too crazy about the brace. (this is when I let the anger get to me and HATE Infantile Scoliosis!!)
This brace looks similar to his others, but apparently feels much different.  He told me tonight he does not like it. And today at the hospital he was not very happy about it either.  He did not make a big fuss, but it was obvious his feelings for his new brace were not good.  He was not the happy-go-lucky Ryan he normally is when his brace is on.  He had to wear it for a while to check for pressure spots and to let his orthotist know where it might hurt or bother him.  He quietly obeyed, but I could tell he wanted to tear that brace off!
His orthotist said this is very common as children get older.  I see that with Ryan and dread the next few days.
Somehow we'll managed.....we always do.  Check out his new brace.

Even camo straps!

She wants us to transition him to the new brace so he is sleeping in the old one tonight.  Tomorrow after he gets up he will have a short break and then we move to CAMO while we do school.
The AWESOME news is that the IN brace xray shows his curve down to ONE DEGREE!!!!!
We have never seen or heard that number before.  The xray looked amazing!  But that is an IN brace xray.
Happy the day is done and now we move forward with the new brace.  I'll keep you posted on how he does with his CAMO.

New Brace Day!

We are headed to Scottish Rite later today to pick up Ryan's new brace.
He is SO excited to get his new CAMO brace!!
It is a simple visit to see his orthotist for the fitting and then an xray to make sure he is getting correction in it.  Please say a prayer that this brace will fit properly and feel good(as good as a brace can feel to a five year old)to him.  And that it will help in providing more correction to his growing spine.
An ill fitting brace would actually cause more damage rather than correct.  We do not want to start moving backwards.
Anyway I will update later and of course post a picture of the brace.
Have a great morning!

Chore Chart

I have been wanting to make the boys a chore chart for a year now, but never seem to get around to it.  Today Matthew, Mr. Creative, found some clip art that I had printed out.  He knew what it was for and boy was I in trouble.
One reason I had not made the chart yet was because I wanted it to be super cute and colorful and laminated and this and that and ..........you get the picture.  Professional looking.  I love to fiddle with craft stuff, but I just don't have that knack like some people I know.  I wanted it to be appealing to the boys.
Well today Matthew insisted I do it!  And we did!
I found this one where you can generate your own chore chart.  You can pick a Bible verse to go along with it and select the chore you want to add.  And check them off as you go each day.
But again he insisted that we use what we had on hand to "create" our own.  Thank God he wants to create!!!!  So here is what we came up with.  The boys helped me glue the pictures to cardstock poster I made.  Then I finished it up with the smiley face border and Bible verses.
(You must have a HAPPY heart even when doing a chore.)
The boys only have a few chores.  Making their beds, feeding Arthur, setting the table(napkins and silverware), clearing the table(all we could find was a "washing the dishes" picture), taking the trash out and swiffering the floors.  Cleaning your room and picking up your toys throughout the house is a given!
We do not pay for doing chores.  It is just part of contributing to the family.

I included two bible verses on the chart as I am sure their will be days they will need to hear them.  After all  I know how much I dread housekeeping myself.

No, its not the super creative chore chart I had envisioned, but it will get the "job" done and that is all that matters anyway.  Matthew thought it was a good idea to hang it right outside their bedrooms.  This way they would see it first thing in the mornings.  Smart kid!
Chore chart done!

BOYS!

I feel an ER visit coming in our near future.  I have one word for you..........BOYS!
I knew this day was coming.  Yep, he is out of the fort and sitting on top of the frame for the swings.
This is after he got in trouble today for CUTTING his shorts.  He thought they needed a little fringe. I found him sitting on the scissors totally clueless of the danger.
And in case you are wondering I have taken the scissors away.  I tried to have all tools out and allow the boys to be able to create, but Matthew is too creative sometimes.  They are on a high shelf, safely in the school closet.

This evening I caught them playing with pencils as swords.  Sharpened pencils!!!!
And yesterday while playing with a tripod Ryan knocked his tooth out.

They are fearless!  Rough and tough! Loud and CRAZY!  Constantly moving. They rarely tire out and have more energy than I could ever dream of! They are curious beyond their own good.  And must touch, feel and poke at everything. Sometimes lick and taste!  Put them outside and there is nothing clean about them.  Being dirty just makes it that much more fun.  And you know what?  I think I like them this way.  That is exactly how five year boys should be! OK maybe not so dangerous at times, but they are BOYS!  It's hard to take that out of a boy!

First Day!!!

I am happy to report it was short and SWEET!
The boys' first lesson was to sound out what was for breakfast.  I will have weekly menus for during school hours.  Breakfast, snacks and lunch.......it is hanging on the fridge.  I told them they had to sound out the words of what they were going to eat for breakfast.
They were ready to eat so I helped them sound out what was on the menu for this morning.  And boy were they surprised!! The excitement was priceless!  Strawberry-banana smoothie and C U P C A K E S!!!!!!
There was even some jumping up and down!

They were suppose to be really cute school themed cupcakes, but I ended up with this.........

Who wouldn't want a devil's food cupcake with icing, sprinkles, M&Ms and Hershey bars for breakfast?!

After this the energy was high and they were pretty restless so we did start earlier than expected.  But first I had to take some pictures and of course give first day goodies.  They each got new pencils, paint brushes and Creation "silly bands"(bracelets).  These silly bands are the silly things I said I would not allow them to have, but when I saw these I caved. Plus Ryan loves them.....he is sleeping with them on tonight.
The first 2 weeks of their curriculum is all about God creating the earth.  So these were perfect!!!!  If you not familiar with these silly bands they are nothing more than rubber bracelets.  When they are off they are in the shape of something, but on they just look like a rubber bracelet.

These first two weeks will be short days. Very short days.
The boys are so sharp and some of this stuff they already know very well.
I didn't want to run into the next day's lesson since it is about God creating Earth on certain days. There crafts that go along with each day.   They loved it!  Both made comments about how much fun they were having at school.  We had a short break, captured some pictures and ended our day by 9:30.

My little Kindergartners................

I had wanted them to dress nicer for these pictures, but then I thought why?
This is how I will remember them.  Their favorite shorts(which they wear every other day if I get them washed), tshirts and bare feet.

We had planned to go out to dinner to celebrate our first day with Daddy, but he got off early so we all went out to lunch.  The boys got to pick.   MEXICAN!

It was a good first day!  I want to thank ALL the family members and close friends that called and emailed us about our BIG day.  This is a new chapter in our lives, thank you for sharing it with us!
I feel so blessed to have family members and close friends(near and far)who believe in us and are supporting us along the way.
