The Lorax

Welcome to our final day of our Dr. Seuss week!   Today it is all about The Lorax!!!!  And the movie comes out tomorrow!!!!! Yes, we are going!!!  Can't wait!
When I first decided to do this week in honor of Dr. Seuss' bday I had never even heard of The Lorax.  Well wait, I guess I had.  A couple of weeks ago when I took the boys to see the Star Wars movie there was a preview(I didn't even pay attention to it then...just knew it was a Dr. Seuss story).  And at the time I thought oh right, one of those Dr. Seuss movies.  Not a fan.

Well then I read the book.  It is about saving the forest, the trees, the swans, the fish.

Oh my!!!  My kind of book, my kind of movie!  I am a LOVER for all of God's creation!!!  And seriously after reading the book, ask the boys, I almost started crying.

So to say I am excited for this lesson about The Lorax is an understatement.  IF you too know nothing about The Lorax you must go buy or check out the book.

This would be great for Earth Day too coming up on April 22.  We will revisit for sure!!!

Because our family does love nature and the great outdoors SO very much this was right up our alley!  But I think with children you need to start small.  So we went with our yard......our little corner of the world.  If they can learn to take care things here at home they will soon want to take care of the rest of the world.  At least that is my prayer.

I found so many helpful hints at The Lorax Project .  Go there before you start your lesson to find some great ideas.

So here is what we did........
We read The Lorax earlier in the week and read it again today.  We then sat down and discussed ways we can help keep our yard a nice, clean place to be.  Things we can do to improve it, to make it look pretty.

With spring right around the corner it was the perfect time to do some planting.
One of the ideas from The Lorax Project was to make a reading garden.  So we planted seeds for flowers around a tree.  Now we will wait for them to grow  and bloom so we can sit outside and enjoy our little corner of the world.

We also cleaned up around the yard and did more planting in pots.
We also made a class pledge.

Our pledge: to do our part to protect the environment and work toward a healthier Earth for our future generations.
-do not litter.
-turn off the tap when you brush your teeth.
-take a shower instead of a bath.
support your local parks and go outside!!!
-Reduce! Reuse! Recycle!!

Finally we did a CRAFT!!!  Matthew had been waiting ALL week for this!

Truffla trees

If you have not read The Lorax let me tell you a little about the story......there is a greedy man that cuts down all the Truffula trees for their "fluff" to make thneeds.  After cutting down the trees The Lorax speaks for the trees. That is all I am going to tell you....READ THE BOOK!!! Got see the movie!!  You'll love it!
So we made a forest of Truffula trees.
They turned out absolutely precious!  These were all over the web.  I have no idea who came up with it first, but I LOVE them.  And really all you need to do is look at the picture to know how to make them, BUT I will share what I used.

Truffula trees:
-animal print pipe cleaners(Hobby Lobby)
-bag of pom poms
-green play-doh

Ryan's Truffula trees

We decided to make a forest of trees and add our ideas to help the environment around us.  These are simple things children can learn to do.  And we also added the Lorax.
Matthew's Truffula trees

We'll keep these in the school room to enjoy.  And will go over everything again on Earth Day!!

This was my favorite Dr. Seuss book this week.  And I'll have to say I am now a fan of the doctor.

I hope you have enjoyed our Dr. Seuss week.  Maybe you learned about a Dr. Seuss book you had never read.  Maybe it was a craft or those cute little Thing 1 and Thing 2 cupcakes.  And I hope I inspired you to have a Dr. Seuss day or maybe celebrate his birthday tomorrow.

Tomorrow we will head to an early feature of The Lorax!!!!

Enjoy your Thursday!!!!
